The Quick Catch Up

September 8, 2016 by Michele Tuggle Leave a Comment

Somehow, the summer is over. We’re four weeks into school, and the nights are cooling off. But where did all that time go? I had pictured myself having plenty of time to write and blog during my relaxing evenings overlooking the canyon (house-sitting for our friends with the cutest guest cottage ever). Or for sure I’d have time in the peaceful nights, out on the deck, watching the sunset at my in-laws house. I’ll admit, I opened the laptop a few times, but never made very much progress. I had intended to document every detail, because at the time, it seemed like every day was a monumental change.

We were living our still-very-busy life out of our car, and not having a home base was very discombobulating. We moved between two storage units, my new small temporary office space, my husbands office, and the new property (where we moved our cat and bunny). And this wasn’t counting the place where we lived at night, which included 4-5 different generous hosts. I put many miles on the car, that’s for sure.

Working out of the home was another big adjustment for me, especially when my kids were out of their element, too. Some days we really had no where to go- between one stop and the next with a 100 degree day looming in front of us. One day, I took the kids to Muir Woods and the Beach to escape the heat. Very good day.

Finally, when the new school year was fast approaching and our patience with a long commute was quickly fading, we decided to purchase the fifth wheel and settle on our property. Thank goodness our good friends own it and were willing to let us squat here… more on previous owners later…they are good peeps 🙂

Anyway, now that I’m recounting all these memories, which… seriously? summer is really over? Yes, and really, who wants to read every stupid detail of the last couple months. Let’s start from here.  While we are still waiting to close on this house, every day is one day closer to the next phase of this adventure- the building! the fun part! (I hope).

The Countdown to Own It.

September 5, 2016 by Michele Tuggle Leave a Comment

After many trying months of waiting to close on our new (old) home, we are finally within a week of closing. However, I don’t want to jinx it, and I know that there is a lot to get done in this short holiday week… I guess I’m not holding my breath yet. Still, it’s within sight. And of course, that’s just the start of the next half of this crazy story…the next six months of construction.

Countdown to close: 4 days

Construction due to start: 28 days

…and a new chapter begins

We closed escrow on our old house 3 days ago, and we’ve been homeless ever since. Luckily, this is one of those busy weeks when half of the family is already out of town– my husband on a work trip, and my son at a skateboard summer camp (yes, that is a real thing).

So my 10 year old daughter, and our dog, Bailey, and I are crashing my girlfriend’s house. She has been generous enough to have us, especially since she is also kid-free for the week. Next week, we will stay at another friends’ home while they are out of town. After that, a week of camping and vacation before we head home to HOPEFULLY close on our NEW (very old) house. It still seems like a dream, but slowly and surely, we’ve completed many more steps than I ever thought were involved in this process, and we’re just getting started.

We hired the designer to draw our plans, the engineer to- well, do whatever it is that they do involving a very expensive stamp, and finally, we hope to nail down (ha!) the contractor. Things are progressing. Moving out of our house was definitely a reality check- this is really happening, but still…. getting through the next few weeks until we close will be a challenge. Oh, and then there’s that business of 6 months of construction while we’re living in a fifth wheel on the property. Oh yes, stay tuned…
